Arborist reports in the RedlandsYour tree assessed, in writing.
An arborist report is a written assessment of one tree or several. People in the Redlands ask for one for a council application, a development, a builder, an insurer, or because a tree next door worries them. Ours are prepared by Andrew, a certified and accredited arborist.

When people need one
Who asks for a report, and why.
Plenty of tree jobs need only a quote. A report is for when someone else wants it in writing.
- You’re applying to council about a tree and they want it assessed
- A development or building application has trees on or near the site
- A builder or designer needs to know how a tree affects the plans
- An insurer asks about the condition of a tree
- A neighbour is worried about your tree, or you’re worried about theirs
- You want an expert opinion on whether a tree is healthy and safe

What’s in a report
What a report generally covers.
Reports differ, and what goes in yours depends on why you need it. Tell us the reason when you call, and we’ll tell you what’s involved.
Council has its own rules. Councils set what a report must cover and who should prepare it, so check what yours asks for before you book. Our guide to Redland City Council tree rules explains the basics.
- The tree
- What it is, how big it is and where it stands on the property.
- Its condition
- Health and structure: dead wood, decay, disease, lean.
- The risks
- What the tree could affect, such as a house, a fence or a power line.
- The advice
- Keep it, prune it or remove it, and why.
- The record
- Photos and notes, so the findings can be shown to others. Andrew also has a drone for photos of a high canopy that is hard to see from the ground.
Qualifications
Which level does a report need?
It depends on who’s asking and why. Arborist qualifications sit on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The Certificate III in Arboriculture (AQF level 3) is the trade qualification for tree work such as pruning, climbing and removal. The Diploma of Arboriculture (AQF level 5) is for consulting arborists who assess trees and write arborist reports.
Our reports are prepared by Andrew, a certified and accredited arborist. If your council has asked for a particular qualification level, tell us when you call so we can confirm the report will suit before you book.
- Redland City Council recommends at least AQF level 3 for routine tree maintenance.
- For a hazardous protected tree, Redland City Council says the arborist must hold at least AQF level 5, and a Tree Assessment Report goes in with the application.
- If a council asks for an arborist report, ask for a consulting arborist with a Diploma (AQF level 5).
The cost
What affects the cost of an arborist report.
We don’t put a price on this page, because no two reports are the same. These are the things that move it:
- How many trees are covered
- How big the trees are
- How easy they are to get to
- What the report is for, and how detailed it has to be
- Whether council or a developer sets what it must include
- Whether you also want the tree work done
Call Andrew on 0431 732 028, say what the report is for and he’ll tell you what’s involved and what it costs.
Worried about a tree but not sure you need a report? Ask for a free quote on the tree work and say what’s worrying you. A report is one option, and pruning or removal may be another.

Who writes the report?
Andrew, a certified and accredited arborist, prepares it.
What qualification does the arborist hold?
Andrew is a certified and accredited arborist. If your council has asked for a particular level, such as AQF level 5 for a hazardous protected tree in Redland City, tell us when you call and ask what the arborist holds.
Will my council accept the report?
Council decides what it needs for a particular tree and application, including who should prepare the report, so check what yours asks for before you book. We can’t promise a council will accept any report. See our council rules guide.
Do I need an arborist report to remove a tree?
Not always. It depends on the tree, where it is and what you want to do. Redland City Council says approval is generally needed to remove an unsafe tree unless there is an imminent risk of serious injury or damage to infrastructure, and a Tree Assessment Report goes with the application for a hazardous protected tree.
How much does an arborist report cost?
It depends on how many trees there are, how big they are, how easy they are to reach and what the report has to cover. Call Andrew, say what it’s for and he’ll tell you what’s involved.
Can you do the tree work as well?
Yes. We work on all trees, palms and shrubs: see tree removal and pruning.
